Senior Systems Engineer

First Mode is seeking to add new members to its Systems Engineering team that have strong capabilities for working challenging technical system problems within a constrained, fast-paced environment. First Mode has openings across multiple projects related to its sustainability development efforts, such as Haul Truck Systems, Liquid Hydrogen Refuelling, Pilot Hydrogen Production, and Program Studies.

Applicants from all industries are welcome, with particular emphasis in complex, multi-disciplinary system developments. Familiarity with and prior experience in the mining industry are valuable but not required

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop concepts and perform feasibility analyses given an incomplete problem definition
  • Seek out standards and track compliance with safety regulations, processes, and/or state-of-practice
  • Gather and articulate needs and constraints from customers, colleagues, vendors, and physics itself
  • Develop and use a broad understanding of the system to balance pain among multidisciplinary teams and help them optimize the whole rather than the part
  • Bring together disparate groups (subsystems, vendors, or clients) to agree on common interfaces
  • Create and maintain system documentation such as Interface Control Documents, System Descriptions, Requirements, etc.
  • Develop and execute integration & test plans focused on requirements verification within programmatic constraints
  • Support customer engagements through stakeholder engagement, data analysis, and techno-economic modeling

Basic Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in life-cycle development of hardware for a safety-critical system or product
  • Solid grasp of fundamental physics
  • Some familiarity with multiple engineering disciplines, such as software, mechanical, electrical, etc.
  • Strong focus on clear definition of the need before selecting a solution
  • Solid simulation, analysis, and/or data interpretation skills
  • Experience in Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, SolidWorks CAD, and wiki documentation
  • Ability to write and speak clearly about a technical subject matter
  • Flexibility and responsiveness in a fast-paced, dynamic, small team environment
  • Ability to write and speak clearly about a technical subject matter
  • Experience organizing requirements, documentation, and stakeholders across larger projects
  • Experience leading subsystems or small teams within a larger project
  • Experience collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams and awareness of other engineering areas such as software, electrical or mechanical.
  • Experience with systems architecture and conceptual design.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience in Systems Engineering (or equivalent) role; job level dependent on experience and qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or engineering discipline, or equivalent experience
  • Experience with some standard Systems Engineering processes such as requirements management, interface control documentation, and integration and test / V&V principles, etc


  • This position will be located at First Mode’s headquarters in Seattle, WA and will be required to work in office >60% of working hours
