Mechanical Thermal Fluids Engineer, Fuel Cell Process Air

This Mechanical Thermal Fluids Engineer will have the chance to design, architect, test, and deliver the critical process air systems for our hydrogen-powered haul truck systems. This engineer will be the responsible engineer for the process airflow systems to feed the fuel cells with the highly-conditioned airflow at the proper mass flow, velocity, and dynamic pressure ranges to enable the powerplant to run in the mining environment. They will be the lead for the testing of the airflow systems in the fuel cell subsystems and system-level qualification testing.

Position Responsibilities

  • Analysis of fuel cell process air system elements
  • Scope, design, and size the fuel cell process air systems on the pilot and fleet haul truck systems
  • Given requirements from the fuel cell module vendor and the haul truck systems, develop the hardware and test programs for the process air systems providing air to the fuel cell modules
  • May include manifold and flow design and analysis
  • May include CFD analysis
  • May include thermal and performance analysis and testing

Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical, Thermal, Aerospace Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience in Fluid Systems Design or Analysis
  • 3+ years of proven experience in fluid mechanics and fluid dynamics fundamentals
  • 3+ years of experience in hardware development & testing cycles for engineering applications
  • 3+ years of experience in engineering hardware systems design and verification of performance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Gaseous airflow system design and analysis
  • Fluid Systems testing – prototype or production
  • Engineering in the Full Life Cycle – from concept through prototype to production
  • CFD Analysis is a strong plus
  • 1D Fluid Flow Analysis
  • FLUINT is a plus
  • ANSYS thermal is a plus
  • NX CAD and CAE is a strong plus
  • Other industry standard CFD analysis tools are a strong plus

Additional Requirements

  • Some travel may be required to support interface development, vendor interactions, and systems deployed in the field
  • Once operating within the team, training and certification in hydrogen systems safety will be required
  • May be required to climb ladders and stairs on the systems equipment during assembly and once deployed in the field


  • This position will be located at First Mode’s headquarters in Seattle, WA and will be required to work in office >60% of working hours

Total Rewards

Base Salary Range: $120,000 - $211,500

      Mechanical Engineer II: $120,000 - $162,000
      Senior Engineer I: $141,000 - $191,000
      Senior Engineer II: $156,500 - 211,500
